TripAdvisor is a website that allows users to review and share information about restaurants, hotels, and other travel and tourism businesses worldwide. Users can access the website via desktop and mobile apps.
TripAdvisor was founded in 2000 in San Francisco by Tony Hsieh and Russel Simmons, the co-founders of LinkExchange. The website grew quickly, with 10 million user reviews within the first year. In 2005, the founders sold the company to IAC.
In 2007, TripAdvisor was blocked in China after the website refused to comply with the Chinese government’s censorship guidelines.
The company later purchased the websites HolidayMe.com, HolidayPirates.com, HotelClub.co.uk, and CityMaps.com.
In 2016, TripAdvisor was acquired by Expedia.
Tripadvisor app usability
The Tripadvisor app is available on both the iPhone and Android OS.
When users first download the app, they are presented with 5 of the most popular restaurants in the general vicinity. If the user taps on one of the restaurants, they are taken to a map of the area with the restaurant’s location pointed out with a red bubble.
The user can also see the distance to the restaurant in meters, the restaurant’s star rating, the average cost per person, the facility type, and the type of cuisine. If the user taps on the restaurant’s name, the user is taken to a page that gives more detailed information about the restaurant, a link to a website for the restaurant, a button to add the restaurant to a loyalty club, a button to find a reservation for the restaurant, a button to find more information about the restaurant, a button to add the restaurant to the user’s favorites, a button to pin the restaurant to the map, a button to update the user’s private data on the restaurant, a button to get directions to the restaurant, a button to share the restaurant with a friend, a button to view more restaurants, and a button to create a user account with Tripadvisor.
The app’s design is sleek and minimalist, with a dark background behind the text and red bubbles marking the location of restaurants.
The app’s navigation is simple, with the most popular restaurants listed at the top of the app and a prompt that tells the user that they can find a more detailed list of restaurants a the bottom of the list. It takes about 15 seconds to find the restaurant the user is looking for.

What is a verified badge?
A verified badge is a checkmark that appears next to a TripAdvisor account name in search and on the profile. It means TripAdvisor has confirmed that an account is the authentic presence of the public figure, celebrity, or global brand it represents.
It is not currently possible to request a verified badge on TripAdvisor and a verified badge cannot be purchased. The qualifications are proprietary, so we, unfortunately, cannot share more information regarding the selection criteria.
If your account does not have a verified badge, there are other ways to help let people know that you are authentic. For example, you can add information to your TripAdvisor profile to tell travelers it is really you or link to your TripAdvisor profile from your official website.
What is the TripAdvisor travel feed?
The travel feed is a collection of reviews, videos, photos, links, and Trip travel guides shared by those you follow. When you follow the friends, travel experts, and brands whose opinions mean the most to you, your travel feed will be filled with advice and ideas you can trust. Pick any destination, and your travel feed will update to focus on the places that interest you — giving you helpful advice and ideas, plus all the tools you need to make it happen.
How do I follow someone?
To follow a friend, travel expert, or brand, click on the following icon on the right-hand side of their posts in the travel feed. You can also follow someone by visiting their profile and clicking the follow button. Once you follow someone, you will see more of the content they share in your travel feed.
