Signal Messenger App Review

Reviews

Send and receive high-fidelity messages, participate in HD voice/video calls, and explore a growing set of new features that help you stay connected. Signal’s advanced privacy-preserving technology is always enabled, so you can focus on sharing the moments that matter with the people who matter to you.

Signal Messenger is a free secure messaging app for iPhone and Android that enables you to send and receive messages without the worry of being hacked.

The app is used by over 7 million people worldwide and is endorsed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The encryption used by the app means that your messages are secured with forward-secret AES-128, and it does not use phone numbers or emails to identify users, so you can be sure the person on the other end of a conversation is the person you’re talking to.

You can also use Signal Messenger to make high-quality encrypted phone calls, including free long-distance if you call the United States. You can make a call to any phone number in the world, and you can also call Signal back from any phone. The app also has a call history to see the numbers you have called and the last number you called or sent a message to.

Another great feature for those who like to travel is Signal’s ability to keep your messages and call history backed up and securely synced across all your devices.

Your messages are never stored on any servers, and its end-to-end encryption assures that not even Signal can decode your messages.

The app also has a “burner mode,” which lets you create temporary, disposable numbers that expire after a set amount of time. The minimum length of time for the burners is 24 hours, and they are reset automatically every time you log back on.

Some of the downsides to the app are that it is only available for iPhone and Android devices, and it is not encrypted on its own, but it does use 128-bit AES-GCM encryption.

Users like:

  • Fully open-source
  • Intuitive interface
  • Allows audio chat, with verification
  • Designed from the ground up to be nothing but a secure messaging platform

Users don't like:

  • Not widely used or known
  • Requires your phone number for contact discovery
  • Anyone intent on tracking your internet use can see you’re using Signal. However, they won’t be able to read your messages
  • The user interface and some of the user experience design can have some, let’s say, interesting glitches. However, none of these problems affect the security

Why to choose/Best for:

  • Messages are delivered quickly and reliably, even on slow networks. Signal is optimized to operate in the most constrained environment possible
  • You can use your existing phone number and address book to securely communicate with your friends
  • Choose custom alerts for each contact, or disable noises completely. Simon & Garfunkel wrote a hit song about it in 1964, and you can experience the sound of silence whenever you want by choosing “None” as your notification ringtone
  • State-of-the-art end-to-end encryption keeps your conversations secure. Privacy isn’t an optional mode — it’s just the way that Signal works. Every message, every call, every time
  • Signal is a completely independent 501c3 nonprofit. Development is supported by users like you. No advertisements. No trackers. No kidding
  • Whether they live across town or across the ocean, Signal’s enhanced audio and video quality will make your friends and family feel closer
  • Use the built-in image editing features to sketch, crop, and flip your outgoing photos. There’s even a text tool so that you can add more words to the 1,000 that your picture is already worth
  • Switch to the dark theme if you refuse to see the light

  • Can I use Signal when I travel?

Absolutely. All Signal calling and messaging is done over the internet. As long as you are connected to the internet without any restrictions, then everything will work just as it did when you were home. Your contacts can still reach you at your Signal registered number. In order to reinstall or re-register Signal, you need access to SMS or calls to your SIM card. Contact your mobile provider before you head abroad to make sure you can receive SMS or calls to that number if you plan on reinstalling Signal or wiping your phone while away from home.

  • Can I use Signal for work?

Yes, you can use Signal for work!

Your entire company can use Signal on Android, iOS, or desktop. Each primary device needs a separate phone number in order to register.

There are no settings to change in Signal to switch between personal or business usage.

    • It’s been really glitchy recently on AT&T.

    • Encrypted end to end messaging that is still easy to use, and meets my needs and wants.

    • Pretty good, overall. A little buggy at first, and when one of party does not have Signal. Texts not received at random on more than a few occasions. Regardless, it is a free app, and the technology is extremely valuable. Privacy today, is paramount. I consider this company to be an ally of the people, not just a company marketing an application. Bill Of Rights. Nothing more important at the moment.

    • Amazing app. I use it daily to message friends and family as well as copying over text, files and sounds from computer to computer via the Note to Self feature. Loading is now way faster

    • This app is good but I find it annoying in some cases. When I send a message to a friend, it won’t get delivered if the person hasn’t open the app yet even though that person is not offline. Sending photos and videos in this apps takes ages. I would definitely use this app in the long run if it improves.
